What to make of that. S.Edhi is highly revered person in Pakistan and him saying that. I hope we can clarify that soon as it is being spread around like wild fire. Q. Have you ever been approached by political or other groups for support? A. Once, I was approached by General Hamid Gul, Imran Khan and few others, mostly military and intelligence officials, who were conspiring to overthrow Benazir Bhutto’s second government and wanted me to get involved. I declined because I am a social worker and not a politician. I also did not want to tarnish the credibility of my organisation by getting embroiled in something that obviously seemed quite disturbing. Eventually, I was made to feel threatened enough to temporarily leave the country. The statement is a bit confusing. Imran Khan might have contacted him but not to overthrow BB's govt. as he was not even in politics at that time. It must have been Hamid Gul.

Being a social worker himself, i dont think IK did a mistake by contacting Edhi.

I have heard similar news long ago that Imran Khan did try to inflence Edhi for certian political objective. As our opponents are playing with this statement of an honourable person like Edhi, there should be an offical reponse from PTI or Imran Khan himself. There is a lot in this story which should come out now. Otherwise this issue would be played against us at right time to malign us infront of public. If there is something wrong in Mr. Edhi's statement ,he should be requested to clarify it.

Benazir's government was dismissed by the troika of Farooq Leghari, Army GHQ, Nawaz Sharif and Shahid Hamid. Edhi has got nothing to do with this. IK was barely into politics back in 1996. Benazir's government was dismissed because of clash with the judiciary, low foreign exchange reserves, riots in karachi, killing of murtaza bhutto, massive corruption and personal fight with Leghari.

I believe some of the parts of Edhi,s interview are correct.

This is also seems correct that Hamid Gul was impressed by the popularity of Imran Khan and he tried to offer him many things. But Khan Sahib does not like dictations from the Establishment or any other influencing source. So Hamid Gul basically framed Zaid Hamid and now he is backing him and trying to make him as saviour of Pakistan.

Edhi was also contacted and upon denial to Hamid Gul Party, he was threatened and even when he was in London, he issued that statement. It was everywhere at that time.

Parts of his interview might be misrepresented by the media. He might have not said that Imran was involved in destablizing Benazir though Imran was not happy by Benazir at time. But IK was never involved in any dirty game.

People in Politics even tried multiple times to implicate him any way, even they used Javed Miandad also to some extent. But it never worked out.

I am asking IK, Alvi or PTI itself MUST come out with a rebuttal. This must be dealt with immediately. Professionally yet aggressively. You are right, we must not wait for media programs to exploit it and then very late we come up with a rebuttal. Then you are on your back foot and it is not effective political strategy. Dr.Asad

It is an old story. I respect Eidhi for his work but it is also a fact that he is not less educated to tackle interviewers and some time gave controvercial statements.

I am sure there is a certain mix up in the interview as Edhi ususualy do. He is a sincere person but many time praised Mr. Musharraf, because he is unable to see things in political perspective.

No doubt Mr. Hamid Gul contacted him and IK to jointly come into politics on one platform. And even might have contacted Edhi IK to join politics.

Regarding Benazir's government downfall, it is a seperate thing and Edhi and even IK could not have played any roll being not entity in Pakistan politics at that time. Because BB's government was dessolved in 1993.

God help those, who help themselves.

The PTI Chairman Mr Imran Khan has met Mr Edhi only once and that was when he was collecting funds for SKMT in 1994. He met on the recommendation of Dr Haroon who was the physio of the Pakistan team. Mr Khan remembers that Dr Haroon was also the Trustee of the Edhi Foundation and he insisted with Mr Khan that Edhi Sahib is in London and that they must meet up. Khan Sahib was then neither in politics nor was he interested in politics.

Khan Sahib says that he met with Mr Edhi in London. Mr Khan remembers that all that transpired, details of which can still be confirmed from Dr Haroon, was that as there were only two major NGO’s on Pakistan then SKMT and Edhi, they both should form a pressure group to push the government into spending more on Health, Education and Welfare. The discussion of a pressure group was purely in this regard. Mr Imran Khan never met Mr Edhi along with Lt Gen ® Hameed Gul, and never was any discussion held with Mr Edhi regarding politics. Mr Khan continues to respect Mr Edhi for his philanthropic work.

I would request all of you to put this clarification everywhere Mr Edhi’s statement is being printed, and would also request Mr Omar Cheema to issue a press release to the paper where Mr Edhi’s statement has been published.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Arif Alvi,
Secretary General,
