Hello everyone

I know many who have internet are more likely living in bigger cities or abroad. I am basically addressing those who belong to village or smaller towns. I want to know what is your experience with Basic Health Unit or Tehsil District Hospital.
PTI is creating Health Policy. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Please write about
1. Do you have a Tehsil D Hospital nearby or BHU in your village
2. Do you or your family ever go there
3. Please rate it on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the worst)
4. Do you ever see doctors in the clinics
5. How much chori (theft) is going on
6. Whats your opinion why is it working (poorly or good) the way it is

Thank you

Dr.Asad

i am from a small village in pindi and there is no hospital in our area, everyone who can afford goes to hospitals in islamabad. most of the people go to local hakeems/ or people that work in pharmacy for most of the stuff. There have been cases in our areas that people have died because they got injected by wrong medicines by unqualified people. i would give it a 9 in our area. its just bad and hopefully someone does something about it.

This is a good initiative and we all support it. Majority belongs to rural areas but migrated to urban area for employment/business purpose with links still active to home towns. The condition of both health units and educational facilities are deplorable and low quality. The condition of school buildings and health units is very bad, medicines and qualified doctors are not available, libraries and computer labs at school, even at college level are missing or if available no maintenance, no upgradation, no books, no beds, no water, etc, and people are living in complete unhygenic condition; so rating is at the lowest. Now, what's the solution is debatable? Our focus should be to put a foolproof system in place, financial prudency is ensured, full accountability of medical and para-medical staff to ensure proper delivery of service, check and balance system for supply of medicine, hardware, software, better working conditions, introduction of management of information system at each level, etc, and most important bring the culprits if found guilty to book across the board to ensure good governance. Now, preparation of good policy for health sector is not a problem, the main problem is implementation which is the weakest area in this country. We must stop the habit of ignoring wrong doings of the executors who are easily escaped after sin, misdeeds, embazelment, fraud, corruption, etc. Here is the role of an independent and strong justic system Imran Khan has been advocating since his creation of the party and such corrupt people get escaped easily by one way or the other while common citizen is the most sufferer of wrong doings of the bad people. So much so, the hurdle are created by such guys for honest, hard workers and patriotic citizens and try to malign them in such a way that the innocent person who wanted to serve the institution with full honesty, dedication and commitment, is finaly forced to run away to bring the institution back in the grip of bad administrators.

Though we all belong to rural segment of society and we have roots there but when we move to cities it immaterial whether we visit hospitals or whether doctor/medicine is available or not; the availability of such facilities to poor segment of society of rural area must be ensured and its the responsibility of the state to meet basic requirements of every common citizen, particularly in the social sector.

So, I strongly recommend and request the economists, policy makers, technocrats, civil society organizations, entrepreneurs, journalists, etc, belong to PTI to put their heads together, brain strom the past success and failures to come up with a comprehensive policy for providing health and educational facilities at par with cities and of international standard across the country to minimize or fill the gap. But remember strict implementation is pre condition to make such policies worth using and workable. God bless you all ....

Dr Asad, creating a PTI health policy is a brilliant idea. It is very much needed (as is an education policy) so as to make PTI more credible and a more serious option for the people. In addition to the health policy, we can also look into the idea of providing health camps in rural areas. there already are independent people doing this (i know at least one of them). they can also be persuaded to come under our wings and can be made more organised and more effective. because obviously they need funds to operate and we as a party could raise much more funds than what they can manage on their own.

another suggestion i would like to make to admin is to create separate areas on the website one each for the health and education policies. we can then advertise them and let people contribute their valuable suggestions to the area. contribution to these areas can be made public because there would be many people who might be diehard patriots but are not members of PTI.

Dr Asad

We need to announce that we will create a National Health Service. I would advise looking at the work of the foundation of the NHS as envisaged and implemented in the UK by the Beveridge report and its implementation by Bevan. We have to remember that such a service is in our grasp. Following WWII the UK was also strapped for cash.
Also please examine the Cuban model.
May I also suggest that we need to think about including the development of a Non-for-profit drug manufacturing unit in Pakistan in the plans. For example, the UK costs of running the NHS includes over 40% for cost of drugs. The ability to develop generic and non-patented drugs will literally help millions, not only in Pakistan but also it would provide an affordable drug for many poorer countries. In effect producing revenue for reinvestment in the health sector and for medical research grants.

Teetoo's idea is also very good. The manifesto and forum for direct comment on ideas is not prominent and developed enough. Can I suggest a quick look at Barack Obama's website?

yes, the NHS in Uk is a very good example of providing quality and free healthcare to the masses. I have heard that the Belgian system is even better. maybe some of our friends in Belgium could help in this regard.

the idea of non-profit drug companies by Faria sounds great but maintaining the quality control will be the most important challenge in it and for that we need real honest people.

my idea of health camps was just a temporary thing to raise the profile of the party, otherwise we shouldnt be needing that if we have a proper health service in place.

@teeto

Maybe mobile units in the form of one or two refurbished trucks travelling the country would be a better idea. As they can go from village to village. Where doctors could volunteer a few days each.

Thanks for all your replies and good suggestions.
PTI is already working on all areas including health, corruption, economics etc.

I am still hoping for more replies from people who live in smaller villages or towns or have experienced BHUs.
