It would perhaps be fair to say that most of the current supporters of MQM would be members of Pakistan Tehrik e Insaf if their party didn’t exist. It would perhaps also be fair to say that MQMs public support has remained static during the last two decades whereas PTI is a party experiencing dynamic growth during the last few years. The latest IRI political survey of Pakistan gives both these parties an equal level of public support. The survey also gives Imran Khan a popularity of 38% while Altaf Husain stands at 11%. This particular statistic may be a reflection of PTI’s stature as a national party and MQM as primarily a provincial one.

There comes a time, in the life of a nation, when all seems to be lost, when there is no light at the end of the tunnel, when the will for survival and hopes of salvation are all but dashed, when the past is a torture, present an infamy and future a nightmare! When good tidings are rare while disasters and reversals are a norm, when the land is stalked by tragedies and a dreadful hush prevails over the landscape.

In times of universal deceit, uttering a word of truth is a revolutionary act and the greatest crime too. So goes the inexorable law of history.  He who is conscientious enough to prefer steep heights of truthfulness, selflessness, patriotic spiritedness over the primrose path of least resistance, of timid appeasement, of petty self seeking, always gets pilloried by the forces of status quo and inertia, so goes another law of history.

With operation in Swat further intensifying and public opinion sharply swinging against the Talibans - thanks to Sufi Muhammad’s public statements against mainland Pakistani constitution – it seems like that all those who have a difference of opinion regarding military operation are dubbed as Taliban sympathizer. This is a perfect example of “Either you are with us, or against us”, a trademark of Bush administration. Imran Khan seems to be an obvious target here, with articles and letters constantly showing up against him with one assertion common in all of them – Imran Khan is a Taliban supporter.

The latest IRI survey has initiated a silent debate in academic circles. Since it has shown decrease in popularity of judicial movement as well as that of PTI, Imran Khan and Chaudhry Iftikhar.

For the past two days, as our local media shows the clips of Indian media openly blaming Pakistan for Mumbai attacks, I was wondering what was the motive behind. Do they want to incite anger among the local population? Do they want their population to close eyes towards the home grown extremism? Do they want to wage a war with Pakistan?

Ever since the new government has arrived, we have hardly heard a good news. Justice Iftikhar, who is a beacon of hope in terms of independence of judiciary, is yet to be reinstated. Lawyers movement, which got Iftikhar Chaudhry reinstated for the first time on 20th July, has been dormant for quite a while now (thanks to the bitter end of long march).

As you have already noticed, website is under going some major changes. They are not completed yet, and some improvements will be made over the next few days. However I would like to mention how we want to move on from here.

I would like to have a serious debate on the role of Aitzaz Ahsan. Most of us supported him because of his role in getting the chief reinstated for the first time, and then as a Lawyers' leader. But after PPP came into power, few of his acts caused serious blows to lawyers movement. I dont know he did it deliberately or unintentionally. But consider the following acts and reply with your opinion.

I have often heard a number of political speakers describing the post 9^th March situation as one man’s adventure against an institution which he thought would cause problems for his future plans to stay in power. Even today a number of analysts refer to ‘Aiwan-e-Sadar’ while speaking of conspiracies against a democratically elected government. This is mainly because the Musharraf is seen as a ‘target in sight’ if we have to point at one person responsible for post-9^th March situation.

The only thing that matters at the end, is your will.
