KARACHI: On the call of the Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman Foundation (MKRF) and Imran Khan, more than Rs 350 million (over 35 crore rupees) donations were pledged for the flood victims till 1:30 am on Sunday night on Geo Telethon 2.
A large number of phone calls and messages from across the country and abroad were received with promises of millions of rupees and aid for flood victims. People belonging to all age groups and segments of the society, including children, students, workers, farmers, businessmen, industrialists, and film and TV stars gave a huge response to the call. Children responded to the call by donating their pocket money. Geo TV in collaboration with the MKRF and Imran Khan presented Telethon 2 hosted by Abdul Rauf and Nida Sameer.
Imran Khan sent 150 trucks carrying relief goods to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said the response was tremendous and the people generously gave donations. “We already have Rs 2.4 billion (24 crore rupees) in bank we received as donations. Trucks to carry relief goods were also donated by different people and organisations,” he added.
TV Actor Atiqa Odho said: “We have trust in Imran Khan and he is working wholeheartedly in collaboration with the MKRF for the flood victims”. United Nations representatives Dr Irshad and Ishrat Rizvi said floods had caused huge loss of crops, animals and property, and “we have to initially focus on emergency relief work for three months”. Film star Meera, who was also on the site where trucks were loaded, said: “We appeal to everybody to come forward and donate more and more to help the flood victims”. Film star Mustafa Qureshi said students, children and women were also taking part in relief work.
Many children present on the spot gave cheques to Imran Khan. Ajab Gull wished all the best to Imran Khan. Filmstar Madiha Shah said Geo and Imran Khan were a big platform. “All the work is transparent and is being done in a systematic manner,” she added.
Actress Nirma and TV actor Jamal Shah said Imran Khan and Geo TV were really doing a great job. The five-hour live telethon was attended by prominent personalities belonging to different walks of life, promising that the Pukaar would very soon become the voice of every Pakistani.
Those who participated in the telethon were Imran Khan, Meera, Madiha Shah, Nirma, Ajab Gull, Mustafa Qureshi, Shimayel Khan, Yousuf Salahuddin, Najam Shiraz, Ali Azmat, Jamal Shah, Atiqa Odho, Saadia Imam, Ajaz Aslam, Ghazala, Dr Ashfaq Hassan and others.
