Imran Khan due in Peshawar today

Bureau report

PESHAWAR: Chairman of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan is arriving here today in connection with the ongoing countrywide membership drive of his party.

He would visit the PTI membership camps set up in various localities of the provincial metropolis. According to the schedule, Imran would inaugurate the membership camp at Hashtnagri Chowk and address party activists. Later he would join workers at the University Road membership camp.

Meanwhile, seemingly sick and tired with the major political parties for their failure to eliminate corruption and bring about a positive change in the life of the common man, a good number of people thronged the PTI membership camps for registration that is out in the political arena with the slogan of ‘change’.

Majority of the people seeking registration were educated youth and middle-aged persons, who were dissatisfied with the performance of the successive governments. The PTI kicked off an eight-day membership drive on Saturday that would be followed by a reorganisation drive.

Imran Khan, who has been actively campaigning for the rule of law and justice being the basic components of his party manifesto, struggled to mobilise popular support for his party over the last one decade. However, the PTI membership drive got a good response from the people, who were seeing their messiah in Imran Khan.

“We had expectations from the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal and Awami National Party, but they shattered our hopes. I joined PTI with the hope that Imran will bring about change,” a banker, Uzair Ahmad said.

The party has established 15 camps, besides 10 mobile facilities in the provincial metropolis for the membership drive. Provincial president of the party, Asad Qaiser, at a camp in Cantt area, said that they had set a target of 2,500 memberships but the people’s response was extraordinary as 5,000 people had got themselves registered as members so far, he said, adding, it was enough proof of the growing popularity of PTI. He said that lawyers, students, farmers and people from lower-middle class were joining PTI in flocks. Qaiser said since both the federal and provincial governments had failed to deliver as they had been serving their own interests instead of people’s. He said the drive was aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots level.
